Becca grew up in a devout LDS (Mormon/Latter Day Saints) family. Her parents were extremely strict and protective of their only child. All of their attempts to shelter her from the outside world failed miserably, only encouraging her to rebel harder.

They did manage to force her into taking a mission at age 19, but rather than make her more committed to her faith, it became her breaking off point. Being away from her parents was all she needed to give her the last little push into independence and freedom. She got herself kicked off of her mission and excommunicated from the church.

It seemed that was the last straw for her parents, as well. They refused to let her come home, forcing her to take the few possessions she had with her and start over on her own. She couch-hopped for a while, taking barista jobs until she was finally able to rent an apartment. From there she went to college and got her degrees, and started Café Ultra, all while keeping up regular blog posts and gaining income from her writing.

Now Becca considers herself an athiest, and she still carries a lot of bitterness toward her former church - as well as all organized religions. But she generally isn't one to mock an individual person's beliefs, so long as they're not assholes. She knows people do find comfort and purpose in their faith, and don't allow their beliefs to enable them to mistreat others.

But she has no mercy for people who use religion as a weapon, who use it as a means to gain power over others.
